AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The Canadian government’s decision to dissolve the Office of the Special Envoy on Combating Islamophobia has triggered widespread concern and criticism from civil society organizations and community groups across the country.
The federal government announced this week that it has eliminated the position and will instead establish a “National Unity Council.” According to government officials, the council will be composed of prominent academics, experts, and community leaders, and will be tasked with strengthening social cohesion, addressing all forms of racism and hate, and advising the government on related policies. Council members are expected to be appointed in the coming months.
Mark Miller, Canada’s Minister of Identity and Culture, stressed that the move was not driven by cost-cutting considerations and said the government remains committed to combating hate in all its forms.
Meanwhile, the executive director of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association described the decision as “short-sighted and deeply concerning,” warning that removing these positions at a time when Islamophobia is on the rise could leave vulnerable communities exposed to hate and discrimination.
